Blà rach Bridge
By Lydia Kang
This is where dogs come to die.
It’s midnight in April. Spring has baptized the earth with warm rain and everything smells of thawed soil. I’ve been waiting every night by the bridge for nearly a month, knowing that sooner or later, I’d see it happen. But I’m impatient.
One more night. Just one more, I tell myself, shivering. The damp air sinks into my jacket and jeans as I stoop in the moon shadows by Blà rach Bridge.
Blà rach is supposedly haunted. Like its overseas cousin, Overtoun Bridge in Scotland, it has a terrible, mysterious legacy. Dogs are inexplicably drawn to the stone structure and leap off the bridge to their deaths. Not stumble and fall, but leap. Not one dog, but fifty. There has to be a reason. After all, I don’t believe in ghosts, or God.
I, Deven Bhatti, believe in hallucinations and terminal velocities; in rabies and psychotic brains.
There are far more frightening things, real things. And there are others, too. Like high school and empty lunch tables. I’d moved to Saoirse, Indiana, only a few months ago, and so far my best friends are still the library and the bathroom. I suspect even they barely tolerate me.
A mystery is a far better companion. It asks a lot of me, and in return, reveals small gifts of occasional truths. I fool my mom into thinking this will sparkle on a college application. Anyway, Science Project is more socially acceptable than stalking doomed dogs.
