The explosive 7th book in the bestselling BEYOND series. The sectors will never be the same...Adrian Maddox fled his royal life—and tragic past—in Sector One, choosing instead to join up with the O’Kanes. For years, he’s lived by one rule: love fast, love hard, and always be willing to walk away. He’s managed to guard his heart, keep it whole and untouched—until now. They couldn’t be more different—Dylan, the brilliant, burned-out doctor from Eden who drowns his pain with drugs and self-destruction. Scarlet, the sensuous, sexy rocker from Three, a woman unafraid to embrace the world. And Jade, the whore turned spy from Sector Two, who battled addiction and came out stronger than anyone he’s ever met.Separately, they make Mad long to open his heart, to tumble head-first into a sea of possibilities and wild love. Together, they make him burn, inside and out, with lust and unbearable, unimaginable pleasure. Then one fateful moment shakes their world to its foundations—and leaves the sectors on the verge of all-out war with Eden. It’s the biggest fight the O’Kanes have ever faced, and Mad and his lovers are at the dead center of it. They could end up with everything they never knew they wanted—or lose it all. Including their lives.
I admit it, I wasn’t sure what to expect for Beyond Ruin. Mostly because it has been a while since I’ve read something for this series but as with any series, I found that once I dove in, I was right back in the sectors and more excited about where things were going.
There are things I liked in this book and then there were things I wasn’t completely buying into. As I think about the story more I really am excited about where Kit Rocha is taking the series. The story of the sectors and their relationship with Eden is coming to a head and things are getting very real, very quickly.
This book focuses on the characters Mad, Dylan (Doc), Jade, and Scarlet. Being totally transparent here, I couldn’t really recall much about Scarlet and Jade from previous books but at the start of this one, Jade and Scarlet are together and Mad and Dylan are together but as the story progressed it became clear that all of these characters were drawn to each other although, there is some tension between Scarlet and Dylan. When they all make the decision to come together things aren’t perfect. Each of them has a backstory and as the challenges with Eden begin to make a larger impact on each of them, the stress of their situations create some issues.
I have to admit, I think of the group, Dylan is my favorite. His struggles with his feelings as well as his drug addiction are something that I find interesting and I really wish we had gotten more information on all of this. One of the things I had an issue with was the way his addiction just disappeared while everything was fine between the group and they only mentioned it once. I’m not sure if the group was just afraid to bring it up or if it was something else but regardless, it felt like it was just a mention when in fact, it appeared to play a big role in Dylan’s life and how he coped with everything.
I also liked learning more about Mad and Jade. Both of them have a history that as the war with Eden moves forward, puts both of them in harm’s way and while Mad refuses to accept the role he was born into, Jade is the exact opposite and embraces who she feels she needs to be, even if that means distancing herself from Mad, Dylan, and Scarlet. I also have to say, I liked how both Mad and Jade revealed pieces of themselves to the group that they have kept hidden from others. It was a definite show of trust and I believe it helped them to make decisions about their lives.
Scarlet is a question mark for me still. I don’t feel like I know anything about her and I don’t know if that is just because I don’t remember her from other books or what but either way, it means I wasn’t completely sure of her with this group. I will say, I liked how she clicked with Mad and how protective she was of Jade. I know she is on the fence with Dylan and maybe that’s why I am on the fence with her.  🙂
Overall I enjoyed this installment of the series. I am still on the fence about the relationships that include multiple partners – don’t get me wrong, I love how they all find each other but I’m not sure how the long-term relationship will work out. As for the story of the sectors and their push against Eden, I am super excited to see what happens next. I always love when Dallas and Lex are included in chapters and the off shoot chapters are always interesting as I like to see where the other characters are tying into the existing story. I am looking forward to the next book in this series and seeing what’s in store for everyone! If you haven’t started this series yet and you like dystopian and erotica, definitely consider it.
