With the help of her animal Pandora, Tella has survived the first two rounds of the Brimstone Bleed. But if she wants to win the Cure and save her brother's life, she'll have to make it across icy mountains and oceans - and beat her fellow contenders.
The Brimstone Bleed wasn’t complete when we got to the end of Fire and Flood and Tella Holloway is still determined to complete the dangerous trek through the ocean and over mountains in order to get the cure to save her brother. But the race is filled with not only dangerous terrain, but people she doesn’t trust and twists and turns you’d never expect.
When the race comes to an end, Tella needs to be the only one standing… but can she do it? And what about her friends and confidants she’s made along the way? A race of 122 contestants is whittled down to 41 … but only one can win.
I remember what I loved most about Fire & Flood being all the action the fast-paced storytelling, and the same can be said for Salt & Stone. Almost immediately we’re back in the race with the remaining characters and their Pandora’s, but in this leg of the race, Tella struggles to prove not only to herself, but to Guy that she is strong enough and smart enough to win this race without him.
While Scott weaves in a bit of a love story here, that’s definitely not the focus. I love that Scott really makes you consider what you might do in Tella’s situation. She’s made friendships, she’s started to have romantic feelings about one of the other contestants and she knows that each and every one of them needs the cure just as much as the other.
“I fall asleep this way, entangled in his embrace, entranced by this person I have no future with. It’s then, as I drift into oblivion, that I realize–the Brimstone Bleed breaks much more than our spirits.”
Ultimately, Tella and her crew have decided that they have more than winning on their minds but first they need to make it through the last two ecosystems alive.
And that ending… good lord I almost threw the book across the room when I finished. As much as I was frustrated that it ended there, I’m dying to see where Scott takes book 3.
If you haven’t started this series, it’s definitely a must read in my opinion. It’s an intense read filled with action and adventure, romance and swoons, heart and humor that will have you on the edge of your seat.
Thank you to Scholastic for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts!
