Today Annie Walls, the author of The Famished Trilogy, is joining us to answer a few questions about her series as well as her new book Controlling the Dead. Â
If you know anything about my reading habits, you know that I enjoy a little horror and gore from time to time and last year I came across book one of this series, Taking on the Dead. Â Ever since I read it, I have been wondering what happened to this group of survivors and If you enjoy zombies, a tough and smart main character, and a lot of action, I definitely recommend you check out this series. Â
Controlling the Dead is book two of the series. Â Check out my review of book one, Taking on the Dead, if you would like to, and then scroll down to see what is next for Kan and the rest of the group. Â Make sure you enter the giveaway too – Annie is giving away some great prizes!
With the help of her new companions, the path Kansas follows leads to more knowledge of the ever adapting famished.
The team finds help in unlikely places, meeting more survivors, and discovers the possibility of a new beginning.
When the team experiences a devastating loss, Kansas struggles to keep her humanity from fading and distorting like that of the surviving society around her. It begins with knowing who to trust and who to leave behind. First, she must trust herself – she won’t make the same mistakes twice.
As the answers to her questions are revealed, Kansas begins to understand the knowledge comes with a heavy price and great responsibility of controlling the dead.Â
In a trilogy plot thick with twists and turns, this adult dark fantasy is as emotional as it is horrifyingly gripping.
If you could introduce one of your characters to another character from another book, who would it be and why?Â
I’d introduce every character in The Famished Trilogy to Moby Dick. It’d beinteresting to see how they’d fare and interpret him.
What is the one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you?
I’m an open book…I can’t think of anything that would surprise anyone. I have a tattoo on my ass. LOL.
What authors have influenced you?
L.K. Hamilton, Poppy Z. Brite, Joyce Carol Oates, Kelley Armstrong… to only name a few.
What is the last book that you recommended to someone?
Eesh. Haha… The first Rock Harlot book by Kendall Grey, I recommended to my editor. Funny and disgusting. I loved it.
Any advice for aspiring writers?Â
Be interesting.
Are you working on anything right now that you can tell us about?
I am. I have several projects under way including a new series… Another dark fantasy in a dystopian world. I’m watching a lot of cadaver dissection videos and just got approved for a sit in of one… LOL! Exciting stuff. My main protag is a very strong empath hiding her abilities from the government by working for them. She’s a medical examiner and autopsies some weird things. I’m very stoked to dive in head first, but Living with the Dead comes first. I also wrote a quirky love story that I’ll be querying agents for and hopefully, traditionally publish under a pen name.
Do you read a lot and if so, what are some of your favorite books?
I read almost as much as I write. Some of my faves are In the Garden of Good and Evil, Exquisite Corpse, The Serpent and the Rainbow, Salem’s Lot, and The Stand… I could go on and on…
If you could have written any book out in the world today, what would you pick and why?
I’m going to pass on this one. I believe every writer/author should strive for their own voice. That’s what I do.
Do you have a dream cast for The Famished series if it were to be made into a movie?
No. I do not want to see this turned into a movie (Although, I’m not saying I wouldn’t sell
screen rights…just depends). LOL! BUT I have been asked the question before and took a
long time in coming up with actors and actresses that would play the parts very well. http://

Kan goes through something major in book 1, how does that affect her in book 2? Do we see any major changes in her based on what happened?
Yes. It takes her awhile to trust.
Seriously….who’s your favorite? Mac or Rudy?
This is like asking who my favorite child is.
What do you think are Kan’s best and worst qualities?
I love how Kan can adapt and keep her head in any situation. Her worst qualities are stubbornness and she can act like a child at times.
Without giving anything major away, what can we expect with Controlling the Dead?
New settings and new colorful characters.
