A new novel in the New York Times–bestselling Remnant Chronicles universe, in which a reformed thief and the young leader of an outlaw dynasty lock wits in a battle that may cost them their lives—and their hearts.
When the patriarch of the Ballenger empire dies, his son, Jase, becomes its new leader. Even nearby kingdoms bow to the strength of this outlaw family, who have always governed by their own rules. But a new era looms on the horizon, set in motion by a young queen, which makes her the target of the dynasty's resentment and anger.
At the same time, Kazi, a legendary former street thief, is sent by the queen to investigate transgressions against the new settlements. When Kazi arrives in the forbidding land of the Ballengers, she learns that there is more to Jase than she thought. As unexpected events spiral out of their control, bringing them intimately together, they continue to play a cat and mouse game of false moves and motives in order to fulfill their own secret missions.
I LOVE Mary E Pearson’s Remnant Chronicles series so when I heard she was coming out with a new series in the same universe I might have squealed a little bit (OK – I DID!!). Dance of Thieves is book one of this new series and I was lucky enough to get my hands on an early copy and I have to say, I loved every minute of this story! I’m not going to spoil anything on this but don’t hate me if some things I say come across as vague.
The story focuses on two main characters, Kazi and Jase. They are both loyal and determined to protect the people they love even if that means they have to sacrifice their happiness. Kazi is a member of the Rahtan, the queen’s premier guard, and she has been sent on a mission to retrieve something. It just happens to take her to the heart of Ballenger territory and from their very first meeting, the sparks are flying between Kazi and Jase.
Kazi has secrets and having grown up on the streets of Venda, she earned her nickname by being a thief. A successful thief. I loved how Pearson revealed Kazi’s background and the pieces that brought her to where she is when we first meet her. Things have not been easy for her but Kazi has survived and although her demons have not gone completely, she has built a life doing whatever she could for the one person who gave her a second chance in life, the queen.
Jase has grown up in a large and loyal family with a history that goes back to before the kingdoms and as the new Patrei of all Ballenger territory, Jase knows he has a lot to protect and prove. When he crosses paths with Kazi in town, things don’t go very well and both he and Kazi end up in a situation neither one of them would have imagined. What I loved about Jase is just about everything. He will do anything for his family and protect what’s his. He also has some secrets though and as he and Kazi become closer and things start to be revealed, it was tough to know how things were going to end up.
Now, I’m not saying a whole lot about the actual story because I don’t want to reveal anything. What I will say is that Kazi and Jase start out as adversaries and eventually they both begin to realize that they don’t really need to be. My favorite parts were when they were chained together (yes it happens and that is all I’m saying about it) and Jase would ask her to tell him a riddle. As their relationship changes, they both begin to change, and I loved how Pearson made it happen.
The other characters in the book were really well done too. First, Jase’s family is everything. They are all so supportive and clearly love each other. Yes, they sometimes mess up but, in the end, they are there for each other. Wren, Synove, Natiya, and Eben are all part of Kazi’s team but they are more than that, they are her family and I loved the friendships she had with them. Pearson also brings back and mentions some characters from the other books and I was sooooo happy about it. I love it when authors give me a glimpse into the lives of characters after a story wraps up…especially one that I love so it was great to come back to some of them.
In the end, the secrets that Jase and Kazi kept from each other eventually catch up to them and I’m not going to lie, it creates some challenges. I was really worried about how things were going to wrap up for Kazi and Jase in this book because these two are officially some of my favorites. With that said, I loved the ending but am also very much looking forward to the next book in the series because…THAT ENDING!!!
If you haven’t added this book to your TBR list, you should go do that now. This book was everything I was hoping it would be and more. It had great characters, tons of action, and lots of swoons. The twists and turns that Pearson took me on throughout this book made me love every page and if you like fantasy, grab this one as soon as you can. I will be waiting here (as patiently as possible) for the next book to come out so I can dive back into this world.
Thank you to the publisher for the review copy!
