Sometimes we don’t have as much to say about a book that we read but we still want to share the thoughts we do have… This is one of those posts!
These Ruthless Deeds by Tarun Shanker & Kelly Zekas
These Ruthless Deeds is the second book in the These Vicious Masks series and if you like your fantasy/paranormal mixed into a historical YA, definitely check this series out. I myself have been on a bit of a kick lately trying to read more historical YA and this one was a great second book. If you haven’t read this series yet, think Jane Austen meets X-Men…do I have your attention?
Evelyn suffered a pretty big loss in book one and this book pulls us right back into her story. As she works through the pain of her loss, she is also faced with the Society of Aberrations. While she tries to figure out who she can trust and what her purpose is, things start to change for Evelyn.
Overall I liked this book almost as much as book one. I will say the ending upped the rating for me as there is plenty of action and quite a few surprises. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book for these characters.
Ensnared by Rita Stradling
I saw the summary to this book and was immediately intrigued. It is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast that includes robots. I have to admit, I was disappointed with this one. While the story had potential, there were things that just felt off for me and I couldn’t get beyond that.
The characters were interesting and I thought the relationship between Alainn (as Rose) and Lorccan progressed well but there was something about it that just felt off to me. It might have been the fact that he thought he was having a relationship with a robot…I don’t know.
I love fairytale retellings so it pains me a bit to write this. It could definitely be an “it’s me, not you” thing here. This story just didn’t win me over but you might like it.
Chasing Love by Melissa West
Chasing Love is another swoony romance by Melissa West and book two of The Littleton Brothers series. If you were curious about Charlie, this is the book you will want to read. You will get a quick read with a great story about friendship, family, and love.
Charlie is a solid character but I have to be honest, he didn’t stand out for me in the previous book. This book changes that for sure and I loved getting to know him better. Charlie’s friendship with Lucas is tied not only to the backstory between him and Lila but also one of the things that brings them together when Lucas is called back to duty.
The backstory is great with these two. It is clear they have had feelings for each other for a long time and Charlie does his best to stay away but that doesn’t really work out for him. I get where he was coming from in regard to having a discussion with Lucas but Lila is an adult and if she was all for taking their relationship to a different place that should have been enough.
I liked Lila – it’s clear something happened to her when she had moved away but we don’t find out what it was until a bit later in the story. Based on this, it is clear she is strong and a fighter.
If you know me, you know Melissa West is on my auto-buy list as she writes wonderful stories. Her characters are well developed and the stories almost always have more to them than just what you read in the overview. Chasing Love is a quick read and another great, swoony romance by West. If you are looking for something that will keep you turning the pages to see what happens, check this one out.
The Broken Ones by Danielle L. Jensen
The Broken Ones by Danielle L. Jensen is the book I didn’t know I needed. I loved The Malediction series and when I found out this would be Marc and Pénélope’s story I was immediately excited to get my hands on it. If you haven’t read this series, you should fix that immediately and don’t forget to add this one into the mix.
I loved seeing what I would consider the backstory of these characters. Really getting to understand how both Marc and Pénélope had an impact on where the whole series went was fantastic. I also loved seeing Tristan from before Cecile entered the picture.
I don’t want to ruin this story for anyone but if you enjoyed the series, you will want to read this prequel. While I’m sad this series is complete, I loved how it all came together and I look forward to more from Jensen!
