Blaze of Winter by Elisabeth Barrett
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Probably 3.5 stars but I liked this much better than the first in the series! What a difference a little time makes – I was hesitant to start this one simply because there were a lot of things I hated hated about the first in this romance series. BUT I’m happy to say that all of the things that irritated me in the first book – were NOT here in this book!
The story itself was streamlined – no tangents that didn’t have anything to do with the story, no words that took me out of the story because I was cringing and characters I truly ended up liking… a lot.
Don’t get me wrong, this is your typical romance – new girl in town, they fall for each other, she struggles to NOT fall for him and pushes him away and so on and so on, but it’s written well.
Theo, has come back to Star Harbor hoping for some inspiration for his next book and Avery is there to help her Aunt who is recovering from cancer run her Inn… but also to get her life in order. She works with struggling addicts and recently lost someone and is questioning whether she can continue in the same job.
These characters, especially Avery were really well done. I actually liked her, which for me is sometimes a struggle in romance stories. I tend to find the heroines a little on the irritating side. NOW don’t take that to mean Avery and I were BFF’s because in all honesty, at times I wanted to flick her in the forehead and tell her to just listen to Theo once in a while.
Theo – I can totally get on board with him. Seb’s twin brother, dark hair, 6’4″(or 5″ I can’t remember) sexy sexy … Writer, thinker, very much into history… I loved this picture from the start. He was the planner of the Grayson boys and he proved that in several situations in the book. He wooed Avery HARD. Once he met her he was all in and I really liked that about him. Even when she pushed him back he never gave up… I like persistence 🙂
The secondary characters were all wonderfully done as well – everyone had a purpose and I really enjoyed this story and I’m so happy I gave this second book a try. I’m looking forward to the stories of the other brothers… especially if they’re as wonderful as Theo. OH… and seeing what these keys have to do with anything. Did I mention there is a bit of a mystery element to these books as well!
Fans of contemporary romance like the Lucky Harbor series will definitely like this series – but please see my notes on book 1. You might do yourself a favor and skip right on to book 2 to start – Though this is a series, the second book touches on things in book 1, but I don’t think at this point it’s imperative to read the first to understand the story.
