Cursed by Jennifer L. Armentrout
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
I have to admit that this wasn’t one of my favorite books by Armentrout. I love her writing, but for some reason this just didn’t work as well for me as some of her other stuff.
I loved the premise of this story for sure and I even mostly liked Ember the lead character here. She was strong and responsible, but at times I did find myself irritated with her. She spent so much of the book wallowing in her own pity party that I couldn’t see why anyone would like her!
Ember should be dead, but because her sister has a ‘gift’ she isn’t. She was in a horrific car accident with her family, her father was killed instantly… but so was she. Her sister brought her back, but the consequence is that everything Ember now touches… dies.
Enter Hayden. Good lord I didn’t know what to think about him at all. I get that he was supposed to be the love interest, but his blind adoration of his father and family got to be a little grating on me and I totally wanted her to tell him to ‘suck it’. Plus… the dude stalked her for years. YEARS. And she didn’t have a problem with it. I suppose after being looked at as a freak for so long and disliked and hated makes you cling to the one person who treats you kind. Overall he was sweet to her and while I didn’t like him as much as some of Armentrout’s other boys he’s definitely likable if you consider how patient he was with Ember.
As Ember’s life unravels before her, she worries about her sister and her mother and she’s determined to find out who is behind the accident that killed her father and tore her family apart and ruined her life.
After a slow build, the pace picks up and there ends up being some pretty good twists… and even though I figured out who the ‘bad guy’ was pretty early on, the story was pretty good.
If you like paranormal x-men type stories this might do it for you. I adore all of Ms. Armentrout’s other books so make sure you pick those up too!
Cursed is currently a stand alone book – it has potential for a series, and to be honest I think I’d be interested in reading `more but we’ll just have to wait and see.
