My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really really enjoyed this book. Sometimes fantasy books scare me off, because I have a hard time immersing myself into them, but once this book really started getting into the action I found myself avoiding anything and everything in order to keep reading!
Katsa is a Graceling – a rare person where she’s from. She’s been able to kill a man since she was eight and so people, namely the king, try to use her and her skills to their advantage. She’s strong and tough and when she’s determined to no longer be a pawn in the kings games, she makes a stand. BUT not only is she against being used for her skill, she is averse to being tied to anyone. No marriage, no children that isn’t for her.
Katsa meets Prince Po, who has skills of his own and they embark on a mission to save the seven kingdoms.
Prince Po – gah… I loved him and the relationship that evolved between him and Katsa. What started as a friendship slowly grew into a sweet romance. I find myself struggling with what to say about Po here because he was truly one of the loveliest characters I’d read in a while, but I don’t want to give away any reasons why I feel that way LOL sorry! BUT I didn’t feel that way from the get go – he sort of sneaks into your heart and by the end of the book you just can’t imagine how someone couldn’t love him.
There are so many different layers to this story, but once you dive into this book, you will forget about everything around you. This book has the perfect mix of fantasy, action, suspense and even romance! Cashore has created an intriguing world with Graceling and I hope to get back to the rest of the series very soon!
