The Immortal Rules by Julie Kagawa
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I have been dying to read this book… I mean look at that cover it’s gorgeous and I’m a cover hoor… I can admit it, it’s the first thing that draws me in! However I will say this, I am a bit disappointed in the cover girl, only because as soon as you learn Allie’s name I was all WTF? and flipped back to the cover just to make sure my eyes weren’t fooling me, but she didn’t look at all like she was Japanese.
Anyway – I loved Kagawa’s Iron Fey Series so when I found out she was writing a vampire series I knew I had to read it!
The Immortal Rules is told from the point of view of Allison Sekemoto, a fringer living in a future where Vampires reign, humans are treated as cattle and the rabids are to be feared. The world is a scary place and as an unregistered she lives day to day trying to survive with what is left of her ‘family’. When she becomes the one thing she hates, how can she survive. Forced to flee the city she has lived in her whole life, she joins a group of humans who are seeking something she doesn’t believe exists. Between fighting for survival and trying to pass as human she has to decide who she wants to become… will she become a demon with a human face, or will she fight the demon inside her?
The start of this story is a bit slow but once we jump into the action it doesn’t ever slow down… at all. Allie kicks ass. That’s all I can say about her.
The vampires that Kagawa has created are not your typical vamps. I know, you’re thinking vampires… I’m so tired of vampires. But don’t let that keep you from reading this series. She puts a whole new spin on them, and they aren’t sparkly and they are absolutely not nice. The vampires here have no qualms about feeding on humans and they know they are superior to humans in every single way and are happy to take advantage.
The rabids – the only thing I can compare them to in my mind are vampire zombies LOL AND I LOVED IT! I won’t lie, this book has a bit of gore, but I’m all for it.
Zeke – I really like him… like really like him, but this is a major fault of mine that I can admit right up front. I tend to fall for the leading men in my fiction LOL he’s no exception. He’s sweet, genuine, caring and he just made me like him so easily. I want more of him in book two for sure.
Kanin I absolutely loved – in fact I kinda think he was my favorite character. He is Allie’s Sire and mentor … until he’s not and I loved his no nonsense do it my way or you’re out kind of attitude. I can’t wait for book 2 to get more of him.
I think that where Kagawa’s strength is in building not only the world here because I think that was incredibly done, but also on the depth of her characters. I loved all of them in the Iron Fey series (even when i wasn’t supposed to) and this book is no exception. I absolutely wanted more of each of them. (please see all my ‘I can’t wait for book 2 comments LOL) Even the bad guys or the ones we only got a glimpse of (Jackal & Sarren)
So – definitely go read this, especially if you like your vamps kickass and a little blood and a lot of action.
