The Pledge by Kimberly Derting
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
My sister was telling me for weeks that I should read this book and I didn’t listen. I’m not sure why. Apparently I need to listen to her a bit more often. (she’s going to love that I actually typed that out) Anyway – this was another book I couldn’t put down.
In Ludania classes are divided by the languages they can speak. If someone from a higher class speaks, anyone in a lower class must lower their eyes or be immediately executed. Charlaina our heroine has always been able to understand all the languages spoken to her, and from a young age she was taught to hide this skill.
Charlie meets a mysterious boy named Max at one of the Underground clubs where people go to be free of the rules of Ludania. Even though she’s attracted and drawn to Max, she isn’t sure she can trust him. Not with her heart or her secret.
Ludania is ruled by Queens.. it almost always has been. (except for that one time LOL) The current Queen is close to death and needs to find her replacement… only her replacement doesn’t entail what you think it might. (I’m not going to give those details away)
I loved the characters in this book. Again, Derting writes us a strong female character, one who isn’t afraid to fight for her beliefs and protect her family. Max and Xander are both strong male leads in this book and I am really looking forward to book 2 in this series… especially with the ending that we got. It made me all *sigh*
If you like dystopian, fantasy, romance, and young adult… this book is for you. The characters and story are intriguing and the boys are kinda swoony. Definitely give it a read!
