Trophy Husband by Lauren Blakely
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Trophy Husband definitely falls into the ‘chick lit’ category.
McKenna Bell is frustrated. A successful fashion blogger, she struggles with the way her ex-fiance screwed up everything. He bailed on their wedding the day before by running off with a college girl he met while at his bachelor party. She’s convinced she can survive without love, and all she really needs is to find her own hot, young, guy… a trophy husband if you will.
When her ex shows up back in town to fight for custody of the dog they shared, she puts her plans in motion via her blog. Updating her followers about her dates and letting them choose what she wears and even help vote on who she dates. But then she meet Chris… he’s successful and handsome… but not young enough to meet her dating criteria. Is McKenna willing to put herself out there to have a meaningful relationship, or will she simply fight to protect herself and ignore what could be something wonderful? You’ll have to read to find out.
My thoughts on this book were middle of the road. I really loved the characters of McKenna and Chris and found them unique and really well-developed and written, but I struggled with a few things.
First, the ex. I never really got why he up and left McKenna the way he did. Every explanation of the prior relationship made me think they had something good and they were in love. That said, I also didn’t get this vendetta that the ex had against McKenna… showing up and flaunting his new life in front of her, demanding visitation with the dog they shared and then the potential lawsuit for proceeds from her blog… it made him come across as a complete asshole, which I’m sure was the intent, but I never really got any reason why he was doing it to her. I can’t just believe that someone can be that vindictive for no reason what-so-ever. And that’s what I’m left feeling, because there was no real explanation as to why he was doing this stuff.
Second… It kills me to say this, but Chris. Don’t get me wrong. He might have been the perfect guy for me… a gamer and nerd – WIN. What I didn’t understand was why he talked at times like a high schooler.
“You are everything I have ever wanted in a chick.”
no… just no. And don’t even get me started on the very end…
What I did like…
The writing was clean and the story flowed really well. I didn’t ever find myself skimming to hurry the story along and I enjoyed the story. Girl Power at it’s finest.
If you’re looking for something quick, with a hot nerdy gamer dude and some fun, hot romance this might be the book for you!
